Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97,
Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term
benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis or
reliable then my own meandering experience.  I will dispense this advice....now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, nevermind, you won't understand the power and
beauty of your youth until they've faded, but trust me in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of
yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous
you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra
equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind: the kind that blindsides
you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy.  Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.  The race is
long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive; forget the insults. (if you succeed in doing this, tell me how).
Keep your old love letters; throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.  The most interesting people
I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives; some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of Calcium.  Be kind to your knees -- you'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't.  Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't.  Maybe you'll
divorce at 40; maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either.  Your choices are half
chance, so are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body: use it every way you can.  Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it; it's the
greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance...even if you have no where to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions (even if you don't follow them).
Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents; you never know when they'll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in
the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but what a precious few should hold on.  Work hard to bridge the gaps
and geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you
were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old; and when you
do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children
respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you.  Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse,
but you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you are 40, it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.  Advice is a form of nostalgia;
dispensing it is a way of wishing the past from the disposal--wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts, and
recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me, I'm the sunscreen.

                                    O QUE É BULLYNG?


Bullying é uma situação que se caracteriza por agressões intencionais, verbais ou físicas, feitas de maneira repetitiva, por um ou mais alunos contra um ou mais colegas. O termo bullying tem origem na palavra inglesa bully, que significa valentão, brigão. Mesmo sem uma denominação em português, é entendido como ameaça, tirania, opressão, intimidação, humilhação e maltrato.

"É uma das formas de violência que mais cresce no mundo", afirma Cléo Fante, educadora e autora do livro
Fenômeno Bullying: Como Prevenir a Violência nas Escolas e Educar para a Paz (224 págs., Ed. Verus, tel. (19) 4009-6868 ). Segundo a especialista, o bullying pode ocorrer em qualquer contexto social, como escolas, universidades, famílias, vizinhança e locais de trabalho. O que, à primeira vista, pode parecer um simples apelido inofensivo pode afetar emocional e fisicamente o alvo da ofensa.
Além de um possível isolamento ou queda do rendimento escolar, crianças e adolescentes que passam por humilhações racistas, difamatórias ou separatistas pode se apresentar doenças psicossomáticas e sofrer de algum tipo de trauma que influencie traços da personalidade. Em alguns casos extremos, o bullying chega a afetar o estado emocional do jovem de tal maneira que ele opte por soluções trágicas, como o suicídio.
 
Bullying não é fácil de definir, por não existir uma palavra na língua portuguesa capaz de expressar todas as situações de “bullying” possíveis. Este termo compreende todas as formas de atitudes agressivas, intencionais e repetidas entre iguais (estudantes), que ocorrem sem motivação evidente, adotadas por um ou mais contra outro(s), causando dor e angústia, e executadas dentro de uma relação desigual de poder, que tornam possível a intimidação da vítima.
A palavra “bullying” é usada para descrever tipos diferentes de comportamento que visam ferir ou controlar outra pessoa. Algumas vezes, “bullying” quer dizer colocar apelidos, dizer palavrões, fazer ameaças, difamar alguém ou falar mal pelas costas, ofender, zoar, gozar, encarnar, “sacanear”, humilhar, fazer sofrer, discriminar, excluir, isolar, ignorar, intimidar, perseguir, assediar, aterrorizar, amedrontar, tiranizar, dominar, agredir, bater, chutar, empurrar, ferir, roubar, quebrar pertences, sacudir ou fazer com que alguém faça algo que ele não quer.
Basicamente, “bullying” tem a ver com fazer com que alguém se sinta inseguro, insignificante ou amedrontado, excluindo essa pessoa de atividades, jogos ou de um grupo social, ignorando-os deliberadamente. Às vezes, é um indivíduo quem faz “bullying” e, em outras, é um grupo.
A coisa mais importante não é a ação em si, mas o efeito que esta tem sobre a vítima.

Make do, os americanos utilizam essa expressão quando eles usam alguma coisa para um determinando fim, embora não seja exatamente o que eles precisam. É isso mesmo, o make do é o nosso bom e velho “quebra galho”. Exemplo: We don’t have a stapler here, can you make do with some scotch tape? (Nós não temos grampeador aqui, dá pra quebrar o galho com durex?)
Make fun of, eu já assisti a alguns vídeos onde os americanos tiram sarro do sotaque dos canadenses, não sei afirmar se isso acontece com freqüência. Podemos dizer o seguinte, Americans used to make fun of canadian accent. (Os americanos costumam tirar sarro do sotaque canadense.)
Make ends meet, se o sujeito não paga as contas em dia, ele é caloteiro mesmo ou ele não é capaz de saldar suas dívidas com o salário que ganha. A expressão Make ends meet pode ser entendida como “ser capaz de pagar as contas com o que se ganha”. Exemplo: I wonder how John manages to make ends meet on such a low salary! (Não sei como John consegue pagar as contas com um salário tão baixo.)
Cost an arm and a Leg, mais uma vez a questão cultural faz a diferença. Assim como um mar de rosas em inglês é uma cama de rosas (a bed of roses), algo que custa caro, ou seja, custa os olhos da cara em inglês custa um braço e uma perna (cost an arm and a leg). Exemplo: These opera tickets cost us an arm and a leg!
Deliver the goods, quando uma pessoa dá conta de determinada tarefa, esta pessoa “deliver the goods”. Exemplo: “Whatch out for Dylan”, John advised Carl. “He’s a great talker but he doens’t always deliver the goods”. A tradução fica assim: “Cuidado com Dylan”, John aconselhou Carl. “Ele é bom de papo, mas nem sempre cumpre o prometido”.
Dirt cheap, quando nós vamos a uma liquidação o nosso objetivo é comprar as coisas dirt cheap, ou seja, muito barato ou quase de graça. Exemplo: I bought a car last weekend. It was dirt cheap!
Now and then, é o nosso famoso “de vez em quando”. Portanto, se você estuda Inglês now and then é bom rever os seus conceitos, mais dia menos dia você vai precisar dele. Confira um exemplo: Now and then, I like to go to the countryside for some fresh air (Eu gosto de ir para o interior para respirar ar fresco de vez em quando).
Once in a while, é similar à expressão anterior. Às vezes é bom aprender várias formas de dizer a mesma coisa. Portanto vamos ao exemplo: Once in a while John Lock likes to get away from the city and go to the countryside for a little relaxation (De vez em quando, John Lock gosta de se afastar da cidade e ir para o interior para relaxar).
Not sleep a wink, essa expressão tem tudo a ver com a ocasião. Por conta das alterações aqui no blog I didn’t spleep a wink na última noite, ou seja, eu não preguei o olho. Agora eu acho que mereço uma boa noite de sono. So, I think I’ll take a nap (Vou tirar uma soneca).
 Out in left field, é um expressão que vem de um dos jogos mais populares dos EUA, o Baseball. Significa ter idéias que não são normais, na verdade um pouco malucas. Ex: My friend is out in left field. (Meu amigo tem idéias estranhas / anormais.)
Throw a curveball, outra expressão que vem do Baseball. Significa surpreender alguém com uma situação difícil, complicada. Ex.: She really threw me a curveball! There goes all my planning! (Ela realmente me deixou em uma situação complicada! Lá se vão todos os meus planos.)
Get out of hand, imagine que você está dando uma festa (throwing a party) e de uma hora pra outra começa uma briga. Voa cadeira pra todo lado. Você pode dizer que a festa got out of hand, ou seja, saiu do controle.
